My favorite Blu-ray and DVD releases in 2010
1. THE NIGHT OF THE THE HUNTER (Blu-ray)
Charles Laughton's masterpiece and one of my favorite films ever. The 2010 Criterion Blu-ray release features a terrific transfer and also - most important - a total of 2 and a half hours of outtakes.
2. THE AFRICAN QUEEN (Blu-ray)
I never realized how good this wonderful film really looks until I watched the Blu-ray edition. 2010 was a great year for re-releases of classic films!
3. DARK CITY (DVD)
Olive Films did an excellent job with the release of 3 beautifully restored films noir. I loved William Dieterle's DARK CITY (1950) the most but also UNION STATION and APPOINTMENT WITH DANGER deserve to be mentioned.
4. LE GRAND JEU (DVD)
IN 2010 Eureka again had some extraordinary releases in their Masters of Cinema series. Jacques Feyder's doppelgänger LE GRAND JEU (1934) drama was a widely awaited and acclaimed edition.

5. M (Blu-ray)
The definitive edition of Fritz Lang's masterpiece M (1931) was one of the very first excellent releases in 2010. Another beautiful addition to the Masters of Cinema series. If your Blu-ray player does not play region B releases: the Criterion edition of this proto-noir is recommended as well.

6. STAGECOACH (Blu-ray)
John Wayne's iconic performance in John Ford's STAGECOACH (1939) never looked better than in this 2010 Criterion release which is of course loaded with bonus features and excellent commentary. Buy it!
7. METROPOLIS (Blu-ray)
Fritz Lang's 1927 visionary film - excellently restored and filled at last with the long believed lost scenes to its orginal runtime of 150 minutes: Hooray to Eureka ans Masters of Cinema again for a definitive edition.
8. THE SEVEN SAMURAI (Blu-ray)
Kurosawa + Criterion + Blu-ray: 'nuff said! Go ahead and buy this 3 disc release!
9. MADAM SATAN (DVD on demand)
The Warner Archive collection offered some most-welcomed releases again in 2010. MADAM SATAN was my favorite and one of the weirdest films ever. Haven't seen it? You ain't seen nothing yet!
10. IM ANGESICHT DES VERBRECHENS (aka "IN FACE OF THE CRIME") (DVD)
Special honors to German director Dominik Graf! Simply the best Crime miniseries in German TV for years, it is now available in a 4 disc DVD edition (and, yes, it does have English subtitles!).
2010 had many more excellent releases on Blu-ray and DVD and it was very hard for me to select only 10. Criterion produced much more excellent editions (Josef Sternberg silent films, Oshima's films in the Eclipse collection, Roberto Rossellini's war trilogy, Godard's BREATHLESS, THE BURMESE HARP and many, many more). In the UK Eureka and BFI produced wonderful Blu-ray and DVD releases (first of all Michael Powell's THE EDGE OF THE WORLD). Warner's and Sony's overwhelming and growing collection of made on demand DVDs offered many classic film noir that were available before only in nearly unwatchable collector copies only. The regular noir boxes from Warner (Vol. 5) and Sony (Vol. 2, as well as both volumes of BAD GIRLS OF FILM NOIR) shall also not be forgotten. And, and, and ...
